Clarification, mostly: Does Dreamwidth Support answer advanced customization requests?

(I've jumped here from LiveJournal Support, and over there Customization died a long time ago...)

eta: Thank you, everyone! Much appreciated.

I asked the same question once and was told, yeah, sure, if you can. If the answer's long, complicated or involves back and forth I'll redirect them to style_system, though.

In theory, yes; unlike at LJ, there is no blanket rule that we shouldn't give detailed answers to cust requests. However, in practice there's basically me (and I'm not all that competent or all that active) and [personal profile] ninetydegrees of all the active volunteers who know how to handle questions like "how do I write S2 code to achieve this complicated effect?" Oh, and the SupportHelp equivalents often take quite a long time to evaluate whether that kind of complicated styles answer is approvable.

So in practice, if someone asks that kind of question on DW, they will most likely either get no answer at all for weeks, or they'll be sent to the unofficial communities, where there tend to be a lot more code-savvy people than on the Support board. So if you want to have a go at those kinds of requests, I suggest you jump right in.

Oh, sorry, I skipped over your title. If you're looking at CSS and HTML requests rather than S2 code, you'll be even more valuable on the board. I can do S2, but I'm pretty much a disaster at CSS!

It would be awesome if we had more people with the technical knowledge required to talk about customization when users ask. If you know something or can figure it out, you should feel free!

I'm capable of doing it on Support, to, but I usually redirect to [community profile] style_system--it's just difficult to do quality back and forth in a Support thread. I also have the ability to approve Style support requests, as well, so anybody is free to poke me about them.

Ah, that makes sense! Sorry for leaving you out; I thought that you were doing all your awesome Styles stuff on communities and not the Support board. But I think you're right that if you need to have a discussion and try examples and things then community comment threads are better than the board.
